Schleusenpark Kiel, Public park near Nord-Ostsee-Kanal, Kiel, Germany
Schleusenpark Kiel is a public park near the Kiel Canal with wide paths, open lawns, and an observation platform called Wiker Balkon. The space covers about 1.5 hectares along the southern bank of the waterway.
The park was completed in 2012 on the site of a former power plant after extensive cleanup work funded by the EU and Schleswig-Holstein state. This transformation turned a heavily contaminated industrial site into a public gathering place.
The park marks the northern starting point of a connected green corridor that links multiple city neighborhoods and historic sites down to the Anscharpark. This connection creates a natural walking route through different parts of the city.
Ramps and paved paths offer accessible routes to the observation platform, which stands about 17 meters high with views of the canal and Baltic Sea. The park is easy to reach on foot and has no entry restrictions.
A small pond of about 35 square meters collects surface water from the observation platform while providing habitat for local wildlife. This design element shows how modern parks weave environmental care into their structure.
