Jenaer Forst

Jenaer Forst is a protected woodland area near Jena covering roughly 540 hectares with limestone-based soil. The terrain supports specialized plants and sustains diverse animal populations throughout the seasons.

The forest held a military camp during World War II where prisoners of war and forced laborers were held between 1939 and 1945. After the war, Soviet forces used sections of the woodland for military installations.

The forest serves as a gathering place where local people come to walk, hike, and spend time outdoors throughout the year. The maintained paths and rest areas reflect how central this space has become to the community's connection with nature.

The area features well-marked paths and seating areas to help visitors navigate the terrain. Multiple routes allow hikers to choose walks of varying length and difficulty.

Soviet military forces stationed missile systems in the forest between 1960 and 1990, leaving physical traces that remain visible today. This Cold War chapter left an unexpected mark on the woodland landscape.
