Christoph 2, Emergency helicopter at Burgholzhausen, Germany
Christoph 2 is a rescue helicopter of the EC135 type, based in Friedrichsdorf in the German state of Hesse. It operates from a ground station with a hangar and refueling facilities, covering medical emergencies across a wide part of the region.
The service began in 1972, when the helicopter was first stationed at the BGU hospital in Frankfurt. In October 2017, the base moved to Friedrichsdorf after the original facility needed renovation.
The crew of Christoph 2 brings together doctors, paramedics, and federal police pilots who work as a single team on every mission. This combination of civilian medicine and government aviation is common in German air rescue, though rarely visible to the public.
The helicopter flies during daylight hours and can be called out any day of the year. Because this is an active emergency station, public access to the grounds is generally not possible.
The station's landing platform uses an electronic sled system that automatically adjusts the surface to help the helicopter land safely in changing weather. This was considered a technical novelty when it was first introduced in German air rescue.
