Eisenbahnmuseum Würzburg is a railway museum in Würzburg housing a collection of steam locomotives and historic railway vehicles at Würzburg-Zell station. The machines and carriages on display span different eras and demonstrate the evolution of rail technology across the decades.
The museum was established to preserve and display the heritage of German railways. Among the pieces on view is a steam locomotive built in 1943 that represents the standard machines of that era.
The collection grew out of a group of active and former staff of the Würzburg depot (Betriebswerk) who organised in the 1980s and worked on historic vehicles in their free time. The 52 7409 came from Linz in Austria in 1984 and was rebuilt over more than 20,000 hours. Since July 1998 it has run regularly on special trains.
The museum is open on specific days each week when visitors can watch maintenance work on the historic trains. It is wise to check opening times in advance and allow enough time to explore the various vehicles and workshop areas.
The steam locomotive 52 7409 was bought in 1984 from Linz, Austria, and rebuilt over more than 20,000 hours before entering regular special-service use in July 1998. The site also keeps the former Würzburg diesel V 100 1200, built in 1963, which returned to service in 2009.
