Fürstenberg barracks, Military barracks in Donaueschingen, Germany.
Fürstenberg barracks is a former military complex in Donaueschingen, made up of several buildings arranged across a large open site in the style typical of early 20th-century German barracks. The grounds include a former stable section known as the Marstall, along with a range of functional structures.
The barracks were built in the early 20th century to house military units and remained in active use for decades. A 2017 discovery of Wehrmacht memorabilia on the grounds triggered a nationwide review of comparable facilities across Germany.
The former barracks now serve as a gathering place for the people of Donaueschingen, hosting markets and community events throughout the year. Visitors can walk through spaces that have shifted from a closed military world to an open public one.
The site is not permanently open to the public and can mainly be visited during events and seasonal markets. It is worth checking in advance what is planned, as access outside of those occasions is limited.
The Marstall, the former stable building within the complex, has survived while similar structures at other German barracks were demolished long ago. It gives visitors a rare look at the kind of working infrastructure that kept a military base running day to day.
