Herzogsberge, Nature reserve in Cremlingen and Sickte, Germany
Herzogsberge is a nature reserve spanning about 266 hectares of rolling terrain with meadows, oak-beech mixed forests, and seasonal water bodies. The landscape combines open grasslands with wooded sections, creating diverse habitats across the protected area.
The area received official protection status on 19 July 2019, transforming from a military training ground into a protected natural space. This change allowed natural habitats to recover and develop on the former military site.
The grasslands and meadows provide habitats for bird species like meadow pipits and skylarks that depend on open spaces to hunt and nest. These birds are closely linked to the ongoing management of the land to keep it suitable for wildlife.
The reserve is accessible through several entry points with marked trails that make exploring straightforward. Wear sturdy footwear since the ground is uneven and can become muddy after rain.
A natural salt spring in the northern section creates unique soil conditions that support rare plant species in the surrounding wet meadows. This mineral-rich source makes this zone a botanical hotspot with plants found nowhere else in the area.
