Schloss Veltheim, Water castle in Veltheim, Germany.
Schloss Veltheim is a moated castle in Veltheim featuring a rectangular courtyard with a two-story main structure on the northern side. The surrounding moat draws water from a natural spring that keeps it continuously filled.
The castle was first documented in 1160 and remained under the control of the von Veltheim family for centuries. In 1430, citizens from Braunschweig damaged the structure during disputes over trade routes, but it was subsequently rebuilt and continued as a noble residence.
Inscribed stones on the building facade document important events and family lineages, including the coat of arms of the von Honrodt family.
The castle is located in Lower Saxony and is best approached on foot via the marked pathway leading to the entrance. A park on the northern side provides additional space for walking and offers visitors a comfortable way to view the structure from different angles.
A substantial three-story tower rises at the southeastern corner of the structure and is distinguished by an arch that spans across the moat. This tower represents a rare example of the defensive architecture employed when the castle was originally built.
