Kriegerdenkmal 1870/71, War memorial in Spremberg, Germany
The Kriegerdenkmal 1870/71 is a gray obelisk made of Silesian marble, standing on a base with a name cube and pyramid topped by an eagle. The stone bears engraved names of fallen soldiers and now stands in the town center.
The memorial was built in 1872 to honor soldiers from an infantry regiment who died in the war of 1870-1871. After World War II it was destroyed, but parts were later excavated and the memorial was reconstructed at a new location.
The monument displays names of fallen soldiers from the region and shows how communities mourned their losses during this period. Visitors can see the engraved names and understand what this memorial meant to local people.
The memorial is located in the town center and is easy to reach, with an information plaque explaining its history. Visitors can stop by anytime to study the inscriptions and the stonework.
The memorial was demolished in 1946, but archaeologists rediscovered parts of it buried underground in 2018. This discovery made it possible to rebuild the memorial at its current location.
