Holy Cross church Spremberg, church building in Brandenburg state, Germany
Holy Cross Church is a brick church building begun in the late 15th century and completed around 1509. It displays late Gothic features including pointed arches, large windows with decorative tracery, and a distinctive square tower with stepped buttresses reinforcing the outer walls.
The church began construction in the late 15th century and was completed around 1509, incorporating an older tower from the early 1300s that had been added around 1400. A major fire in 1604 caused significant damage, but the building underwent major restoration in the 1880s under architect Ludwig Dihm, with further repairs continuing into the 2000s.
The church takes its name from the Christian cross, a symbol central to the faith it represents. It remains a place where the community gathers for worship and celebrates personal milestones like baptisms and weddings, connecting generations of Spremberg residents to their spiritual traditions.
The church is centrally located on Kirchplatz in Spremberg and is easily accessible on foot. Visitors should check in advance whether services or special events are scheduled, as these may affect visiting hours and the experience inside.
Inside stands a rare chalice-shaped sandstone baptismal font from the late 18th century and a floating angel figure that was restored in 2010 and 2011, adding distinctive character to the baptism rites. The organ built in 1898 by renowned organ builder Wilhelm Sauer is a notable example of his craftsmanship and was carefully restored around 1970.
