Heilig-Geist-Spitalkirche St. Anna, Catholic church in Schongau, Bavaria, Germany

The Heilig-Geist-Spitalkirche St. Anna is a Catholic church and architectural heritage monument in the Bavarian town of Schongau. The building has a baroque style with a tower topped by an onion dome, seven altars inside, and a barrel-vaulted ceiling.

Construction of the church began in 1727 following plans by the architect Joseph Schmuzer, replacing an older chapel dedicated to Saint Anna. Around 1800, the city took over the building, which was then used for a time as storage before being returned to religious use.

The church is dedicated to Saint Anna, the mother of Mary, who is venerated in Catholic tradition as a patron of mothers and craftspeople. Inside, the main altar painting by Gottfried Bernhard Göz immediately draws the eye, depicting the sending of the Holy Spirit.

The church is close to the center of Schongau and easy to reach on foot. Since it is still an active place of worship, visitors should be mindful of any ongoing services and dress and behave accordingly.

The church organ dates from around 1725 to 1735, was built by Ferdinand Stückl, and was restored in 1984. Despite its age, it is still playable and is used during services and special occasions.
