Altenwalder Burg, Medieval castle remains in Cuxhaven, Germany.
The fortification structure features an 8-meter-wide main wall standing at 1.50 meters high, with a foreland ditch measuring 2.40 meters in width.
Built around 797 during Charlemagne's reign, the castle served as protection against Viking raids and secured trade routes to Holstein and the Baltic region.
The site began as a Saxon burial ground from the 3rd to 8th century, where archaeological excavations uncovered a Roman silver bowl now in Niedersächsisches Landesmuseum.
Multiple hiking trails lead to the castle ruins, including the 5.05-kilometer Feldherrenhügel loop from Altenwalde, rated 4.8 out of 5 by visitors.
The castle's construction incorporated sandy loam reinforced with wood and sod structures, creating a rectangular defensive system with a western forewall.
