Altenwalder Burg

Altenwalder Burg is a partially destroyed medieval fortification located in Cuxhaven on Germany's northern coast. The ruins still show recognizable structures with wall remnants and ditch traces that run across the grounds.

The fortification was built around 797 during the reign of Charlemagne. It served to protect the region from Viking raids and secured important trade connections across the North Sea.

The name Altenwalde refers to the ancient forest that once covered this area. Visitors today experience the surroundings as a quiet, green landscape valued by hikers and nature enthusiasts.

The site is accessible via several walking trails starting from Altenwalde that lead through the surrounding countryside. The grounds are open terrain, so visitors should wear sturdy footwear and move at a measured pace.

The structure was built from layers of sandy loam reinforced with wood and sod material. This construction method was typical for the era but offered limited resistance to later attacks.
