Cuxhaven

Cuxhaven is a coastal town in Lower Saxony located where the Elbe River meets the North Sea. The beaches stretch for several kilometers and offer sandy sections, while the quarters of Duhnen, Döse, and Sahlenburg form the main areas for tourism.

The territory belonged to Hamburg from the 13th century until 1937, when it passed to Lower Saxony through the Greater Hamburg Act. The port developed over centuries into a hub for trade and fishing at the mouth of the Elbe.

The fishing port near Fischmarkt displays the maritime heritage of the town, where fishing vessels bring fresh catches throughout the year. Visitors can walk along the quays and watch fishermen handling nets while gulls circle overhead.

The quarters of Duhnen, Döse, and Sahlenburg offer numerous lodgings and restaurants with direct beach access. At low tide, wide sandy flats become walkable, while the changing tides reshape the coastline daily.

The Kugelbake navigation tower marks the precise spot where the Elbe flows into the North Sea and serves as a border marker. Sailors once relied on this wooden structure to identify the river mouth even when thick fog obscured the coast.
