Leuchtturm Dicke Berta

Leuchtturm Dicke Berta is a steel lighthouse in Altenbruch, a district of Cuxhaven on Germany's North Sea coast. The white cylindrical tower stands about 13 meters (43 feet) tall and is topped with a black lantern that once guided ships through these waters.

The lighthouse was built in 1897 to guide and warn ships in the tricky waters where the Elbe River meets the North Sea. After more than 80 years of service, it was decommissioned in 1983 as modern navigation systems and electronic technology reduced the need for such structures.

The name 'Dicke Berta' refers to the tower's sturdy and robust construction, which locals found fitting and memorable. Today, the structure remains a point of connection for the community, drawing visitors who appreciate its solid presence in the landscape.

The structure can be viewed from outside at any time, but the interior is only open during the visitor season. It is helpful to check visiting hours before planning a trip to make sure you do not miss the chance to go inside.

An unusual feature is that the lamp room can be rented for weddings, allowing couples to exchange vows inside the tower itself. This creative reuse transforms a forgotten maritime tool into an intimate space for modern celebrations.
