Österreicherdenkmal, War cemetery in Cuxhaven, Germany.
The Österreicherdenkmal is a war memorial located in Ritzebüttel Cemetery consisting of clinker brickwork topped with a stone globe and cross. The interior features a square room beneath a circular dome with a mosaic floor, and sandstone tablets line the walls with the names of fallen soldiers inscribed.
The memorial was built in 1932 to honor Austrian soldiers who died in World War I. Over 600 names are engraved on 15 sandstone tablets inside, recording the scale of loss from the conflict.
The memorial's architecture draws inspiration from the Kugelbake, a local maritime landmark, giving it the local nickname 'Stone Kugelbake'. This connection to the region's seafaring traditions gives the structure ties to Cuxhaven's history as a port town.
The memorial is located within Ritzebüttel Cemetery and can be reached via the cemetery entrance. The small square interior space beneath the dome limits the number of visitors who can enter at once.
The mosaic floor inside displays the territorial boundaries of Germany as they existed when the memorial was constructed. This geographical detail gives visitors insight into the borders people knew during that era.
