Cuxhavener Küstenheiden

The reserve spans 892 hectares of diverse habitats including heather, dry sandy heaths, wet heaths, dunes, and woodland areas along the North Sea coast.

Military exercises from 1892 to 2003 inadvertently preserved this heathland from transformation into agricultural land or forest, maintaining its natural characteristics.

The reserve demonstrates traditional landscape management through grazing animals, including Heck cattle, Koniks, and Wisents, which maintain the ecological balance.

Visitors can explore the area through marked trails, including the three-kilometer nature trail 'Holter Heide' with nine educational stations about heath ecology.

The protected area houses over 200 endangered species, including rare plants like Gentiana pneumonanthus and animals such as the Leucorrhinia pectoralis dragonfly.
