Cuxhaven district, Administrative district in Lower Saxony, Germany
Cuxhaven district is located on the North Sea coast between the mouths of the Elbe and Weser rivers in Lower Saxony. The region contains eleven municipalities and stretches across flat terrain with coastline, marshlands, and agricultural areas.
The district was formed in 1977 when two separate counties were merged together, with the town of Cuxhaven serving as its center. This combination created the area as it exists today.
The district takes its identity from the sea, and fishing traditions remain visible in the daily life of coastal communities.
The area has flat terrain that is easy to navigate, with good connections between towns and villages. Visitors should expect changeable coastal weather and bring appropriate clothing layers.
Part of the area belongs to the Lower Saxony Wadden Sea National Park, where the seabed becomes accessible during low tide. Walking on the exposed mudflats offers an unusual view of how the coast reshapes itself with the tides.
