Schulschiff Deutschland, Museum ship in Neuer Hafen, Bremerhaven, Germany
Schulschiff Deutschland is a steel training vessel with three square-rigged masts now moored in Neuer Hafen in Bremerhaven, serving as a floating museum and heritage site. The hull stretches 86 meters from bow to stern, and the 25 sails together cover nearly 2000 square meters of canvas.
The ship was launched at Tecklenborg shipyard in 1927 and trained merchant marine cadets until 1972, sailing mostly in the North and Baltic seas. During the Second World War it served briefly as a hospital ship, which helped it avoid being handed over as war reparations after the conflict ended.
The vessel carries the name of a 19th-century predecessor and served generations of young cadets preparing for careers in the merchant navy. Visitors can walk through the spaces where trainees once learned navigation, seamanship and the routines of life at sea under sail.
Visitors can tour the ship on guided walks that take them through the decks, cabins and working spaces. Groups can also book rooms on board for events or arrange overnight stays in the original quarters.
The three-masted rigging makes the ship one of the last surviving examples of its kind in the German fleet. Cadets once had to climb high into the web of ropes and blocks during training voyages, learning to handle sails in all weathers.
