Brückenanlage zwischen Altem und Neuem Hafen, Bridge complex between ports in Bremerhaven, Germany
This bridge complex consists of two bascule bridges that connect the Old and New Harbor through H.-H.-Meier-Strasse in Bremerhaven-Mitte. The structure uses a gear rack system that engages when the bridge arches open and close.
The bridge complex was built in 1927 to connect the Old Harbor with the New Harbor, following the filling of the previous Geeste lock in 1933. This was a major step in modernizing the port infrastructure.
The brick machine house tower demonstrates engineering expertise from the 1920s and symbolizes the importance of harbor connections to the city's development.
The bridges have a clearance height of 5.51 meters (18 feet) and can be operated manually during power outages through a special drive system. Access is always available, and visitors can view the technical installations from outside.
Three small machine houses at each end house electric motors and an ingenious backup system that can be operated by hand without power. This emergency system demonstrates the reliability of an engineering solution that is over 100 years old.
