Leuchtturm Bremerhaven Unterfeuer, Navigation lighthouse in Mitte district, Bremerhaven, Germany.
The Unterfeuer lighthouse is a roughly 26-meter-tall cast iron tower with red and white stripes located next to the Zoo am Meer on the Seebäderkaje waterfront. It operates as part of a leading line system that uses coordinated light signals to guide vessels traveling downstream.
Construction was completed in 1893 and the tower initially burned petroleum before switching to electric light in 1925. Automation was added in 1942, which simplified daily operations significantly.
Local people call this structure the Minaret because its slender shape brings to mind buildings from other parts of the world. The distinctive look has made it a recognizable landmark that visitors immediately associate with the harbor.
The structure sits on a public waterfront path and is easily reached on foot. Visitors should keep a respectful distance since it remains an active navigation aid.
In 1992, engineers moved the entire structure 56 meters to keep its light from being blocked by ships docking at the quay. This major relocation shows how critical the lighthouse remains to harbor operations.
