Osten Transporter Bridge, Transporter bridge in Cuxhaven, Germany.
The Osten Transporter Bridge is a steel truss structure crossing the Oste River in the Cuxhaven district, measuring about 90 meters long and reaching 38 meters high. A suspended cable car system carries vehicles and passengers across the river without needing fixed supports in the water.
Construction took place between 1908 and 1909 by the MAN company to serve regular river traffic in the region. The bridge transitioned from everyday transportation to a heritage landmark around 1974.
The bridge forms part of the German Ferry Road network, showing how early engineers solved the problem of crossing rivers with a moving cable system instead of traditional boats.
The gondola carries up to 6 vehicles or roughly 100 people per crossing at a slow pace. Visitors should prepare to access the structure from the roadside and may need to wait for the next transport cycle.
Only about 8 transporter bridges of this type remain worldwide, making this construction a rare example of early engineering innovation. In 2009 it received recognition as a Historic Landmark of Civil Engineering, adding formal protection to its heritage status.
