Nördlicher Drömling

The Nördlicher Drömling is a nature reserve in the north German lowlands spanning roughly 1,100 hectares and characterized by grasslands on peat soils. The area is crossed by drainage channels that manage water flow through the wetland.

The area gained protected status in November 2019 following a major restoration project carried out between 2002 and 2012. This project focused on retaining water in the moorland and restoring its natural functions.

The area displays typical habitats of the north German plains with moors, alder-ash and oak mixed forests that shape the landscape. These forest types represent the natural vegetation patterns found throughout the region.

The reserve can be explored via marked pathways, with the B244 federal road and the Mittelland Canal passing through certain sections. The paths are flat and suitable for walking through the landscape.

The wetland is home to otters, beavers, wildcats, and many bird species such as cranes and storks. These animals find ideal conditions for living and breeding in the protected area.
