Giebelmoor

Giebelmoor is a nature reserve in Lower Saxony covering roughly 670 hectares and consisting of alder swamp, birch woodland, and oak mixed forest. The terrain is crossed by numerous drainage ditches that manage the wet moorland.

The area received protection status in 1961 and was thereby legally recognized as a significant habitat. The drainage ditches crossing the moor reflect the longer history of how people have used this landscape.

The area is home to animal and plant species that thrive at the boundary between Atlantic and continental climates. Visitors can encounter different habitats that stand out distinctly from one another during walks through the reserve.

Access to the moor is through several walking paths that allow visitors to explore different areas. Bring appropriate footwear and weatherproof clothing, as the ground can be wet and slippery.

About 160 hectares of the moor are forest areas where human intervention is minimal and dead wood decays naturally. These untouched zones show how forests function on their own.
