St. Elisabeth

St. Elisabeth, Römisch-Katholische Kirche St. Elisabeth in Stedten an der Gera, Thüringen

St. Elisabeth is a church in the Stedten district of Erfurt built in 1745 and now a protected heritage monument in Thuringia. The building features a simple baroque style with stone walls, a traditional roof, and modest bell tower; its bright interior is defined by open space with tiered seating rising toward the altar, connected by two staircases to the pulpit and upper gallery.

The building was erected in 1745 by Christoph Dietrich von Keller as an evangelical castle church for Stedten, initially serving the castle's residents and guests. After World War II in 1945, it shifted from Protestant to Catholic use, and since 1976 it has belonged to the St. Nikolaus parish in Erfurt.

The church is dedicated to St. Elisabeth of Hungary, a figure known for her charity and care for others whose story continues to inspire visitors. The simple interior design and the presence of stained glass windows depicting her life reflect values that remain central to the community today.

The building is easy to locate since it sits near a main road connecting Stedten to other areas of the city, making visits straightforward. The open, bright interior allows visitors to explore and understand the structure and its details comfortably.

The building features an unusual arrangement with seating organized like a small theater, where rows rise toward the altar creating an intimate spatial experience. This theater-like design is rare in churches and makes the interior a notable feature that visitors often overlook.
