Südpark, Dresden, Public park in Plauen district, Dresden, Germany.
Südpark is a green space of about 36 hectares in the Plauen district featuring forests, meadows, and open fields spread across different elevation levels. Pathways connect the outer cemetery and lead to the Liepschs Ruhe viewpoint while linking nearby streets.
The site served as clay pits starting around 1900, then became a disposal area for construction rubble and household waste between 1941 and 1991. This transformation from an extraction site to a waste depot shaped the land permanently.
The park features a monument dedicated to the Trümmerbahn, the debris railway that helped transport rubble through Dresden after World War II and supported the city's reconstruction efforts.
The park is accessible from several points off Nöthnitzer Straße and Kohlenstraße with marked pathways for visitors on foot. Wearing sturdy shoes is advisable since the terrain has varying elevations and uneven sections in places.
A children's forest playground opened in May 2023 as the first phase of a major development project running through 2032. The initiative aims to transform the former waste site into a modern recreation space for the community.
