Brüggen Castle, Heritage château in Gronau, Germany

Brüggen Castle is a Baroque palace built from 1686 to 1693 for Friedrich II von Steinberg, designed by Johann Balthasar Lauterbach and supervised by Hermann Korb. Its main building has a ground floor, a main floor and a mezzanine with square windows, a slate-covered hipped roof, eleven axes on the long sides and five on the short sides. A gabled risalit projects into the almost square courtyard, with a round window framed by two reclining stone bucks and putti holding a Grapen.

Brüggen was first documented in 936, when Otto I stayed there and granted Utrecht minting rights; the estate passed to Essen Abbey in 997 and to Gandersheim around the 11th century. In 1515 the brothers Burchard and Konrad von Steinberg built a moated manor, and Friedrich II von Steinberg had the Baroque palace built from 1686 to 1693 to a design by Johann Balthasar Lauterbach, supervised by Hermann Korb. The estate passed to the von Cramm family in 1911 and was renovated in 1992.

The estate has belonged to the von Cramm-Steinberg family since 1911, when it passed through Countess Jutta von Steinberg's marriage to Burghard von Cramm. The tennis player Gottfried von Cramm spent much of his youth here and held his wedding to Woolworth heiress Barbara Hutton at the castle in the 1950s.

The complex is reached from Gronau (Leine) in the Hildesheim district; the buildings form an almost square inner courtyard, entered through the 1714 gatehouse, which once held the court and prison cells. The 44,000 m² castle park and the estate farm buildings from 1693–1716 stand around it, with the 1706 chapel and its family crypt and the cavalier house added around 1800.
