Rittergut Hilmersdorf, Manor estate in Hilmersdorf, Wolkenstein, Germany

Rittergut Hilmersdorf is a former Saxon manorial estate on a high plateau about 4.5 km from Wolkenstein town centre. Its land totalled 251 acres: 215 acres of fields, 20 of meadows, 14 of woodland and two of ponds. The old manor house, rebuilt in the 17th century by Freiherr von Ziesky, survives in heavily altered form.

The estate was created in 1582 through the consolidation of four separate farms into one official manor property. This unification brought with it the requirement that neighboring farms provide labor services to the manor.

The manor displays features of Saxon farming heritage through its arrangement of stables and fields, which still shape the property today. The layout shows how livestock and crop cultivation once organized life across such estates.

The estate is located in hilly terrain and is best explored on foot or by bicycle to reach its different sections. Visitors should prepare for uneven paths and bring weather-appropriate clothing, especially when visiting the wooded and field areas.

Flax from Hilmersdorf and the neighbouring villages of Großrückerswalde, Mildenau, Wiesa, Schönbrunn, Drebach and Geringswalde grew better than anywhere else in Saxony. Most of it was sold to Bohemia and Lusatia; only a smaller part was spun locally, and less than half of that yarn was woven.
