Computermuseum der Informatik, Computer museum at University of Stuttgart, Germany.
The Computermuseum der Stuttgarter Informatik is a museum at Stuttgart University with exhibits from different phases of computer technology. The collection shows the development from mechanical calculating machines through electronic systems to postwar computers, all focused on equipment that actually works.
The museum opened in February 1997 in the Faculty of Computer Science, Electrical Engineering and Information Technology at the University of Stuttgart's Vaihingen campus. Its inventory consists largely of decommissioned systems and components, including manuals. The University of Karlsruhe donated a large program collection on punched tape with a PDP-11/10 and vector graphics unit; a Mincal-523 came from the Federal Institute of Hydrology in Koblenz, was acquired non-functional and restored by reverse engineering. A PDP-12 arrived in 2021 from the University Observatory in Vienna.
The museum is housed in the Faculty of Computer Science, Electrical Engineering and Information Technology at the University of Stuttgart's Vaihingen campus. Since 2020 it has run a virtual event series, "Evenings at the Computer Museum," in which exhibits are presented and demonstrated in operation. The collection also holds early desktop and pocket calculators, computer terminals and graphics terminals with storage tubes.
The collection is housed in the Faculty of Computer Science, Electrical Engineering and Information Technology on the Vaihingen campus of the University of Stuttgart. Many machines are kept in working order and can be demonstrated, so ask in advance whether a demonstration is possible during your visit.
A Mincal-523 system from the Federal Institute of Hydrology in Koblenz arrived broken and was returned to service through reverse engineering. In 2021 the University Observatory in Vienna donated a PDP-12, and Karlsruhe University gave a PDP-11/10 with a vector graphics unit plus a program collection on punched tape.
