Kirche Heilig Geist

Kirche Heilig Geist is a church building in Markoldendorf built between 1963 and 1967. It stands out for its distinctive modern design made entirely from prefabricated concrete elements, which defined its appearance.

Catholic refugees from Rhineland and Silesia settled in Markoldendorf after World War II. The church was then built to serve this growing population and meet their spiritual needs.

The church served as a gathering place for the local Catholic community in Markoldendorf for decades. Its closure in 2022 left residents without a central meeting point that had shaped their spiritual life for generations.

The building has been closed for services since February 2022. Visitors should check ahead for current access information or any possible limited visiting opportunities.

This was one of the first church buildings in the Hildesheim Diocese built entirely from prefabricated concrete parts. Architect Josef Fehlig's innovative construction method was unusual for churches during the 1960s.
