Saint Mary Church

The Saint Mary Church stands as a rectangular hall structure built from hewn fieldstone, featuring a flat beam ceiling and a tower constructed in 1838.

First documented in 1294 in the Codex Cismariensis monastery register, the church was built at the end of the 13th century under the patronage of Johann II of Holstein-Kiel.

The church houses a carved oak altar retable created in 1653 by Eckernförde sculptor Hans Gudewerdt the Younger, representing a masterful example of northern German baroque art.

The church serves as a stop on the regional cycling route called Brottour, offering bicycle stands, information boards, and restroom facilities in the adjacent church square.

The north side features the Blome family crypt from 1619, with wall anchors displaying the initials HB and AB for Hinrich and Abel Blome.
