Computermuseum der Fachhochschule Kiel

Computermuseum der Fachhochschule Kiel, Computer museum at University of Applied Sciences, Kiel, Germany.

Description

The Computermuseum in Kiel is housed in a four-story bunker from World War II and displays around 360 objects from computer history across 800 square meters. The collection spans from early electronic relay computers to microcomputers from later decades.

History

The bunker was built in 1941 as a civilian shelter during the war and was renovated in 2010 to become a museum. Today the building houses one of Germany's largest computer collections.

Culture

The museum documents how computers became part of everyday life through audio documents and films shown at media stations that trace technological development. Visitors can try vintage computer games at emulation stations and experience how people actually interacted with these machines in the past.

Practical

The museum is mainly open on weekends, giving visitors time to explore the displays at a comfortable pace. Guided tours run regularly and offer deeper insights into special pieces in the collection.

Did you know?

The collection holds the rare Z11, one of the earliest electromechanical computers from the 1950s, now protected as a historical artifact. This machine demonstrates how mechanical engineering and mathematics came together in the birth of computing.
