Trauerhaltestelle at Friedhof Ohlsdorf, Public memorial structure in Ohlsdorf Cemetery, Germany
The Mourning Stop at Ohlsdorf Cemetery comprises two concrete structures arranged to create a sheltered gathering space with wooden seating and surfaces for messages. The layout provides a contained area for quiet reflection within the grounds.
The structure emerged from a 2012 design competition where Mareile Hoering and Solveig Trzebiatowski won recognition for their innovative approach to memorial spaces. This project introduced fresh thinking about how cemeteries could accommodate contemporary remembrance.
People come here to leave flowers and personal items as expressions of remembrance in an informal setting. The open design welcomes these acts of remembrance throughout the day without requiring formal arrangements.
The structure sits centrally along the main path near Moorkamp Canal and is easy to find by following the cemetery's main routes. It is open to visitors at any time without requiring reservations or special permission.
A serviceberry tree grows directly through an open corner of the concrete structure, weaving nature into the built design in an unexpected way. This deliberate overlap creates a living connection between the built memorial and the cemetery grounds.
