Metalhenge, Scenic viewpoint and pedestrian zone in Bremen, Germany
Metalhenge is a circular arrangement of metal pillars built on a former landfill site in Bremen-West. The structure provides views across the Bremen metropolitan region and surrounding countryside.
The installation opened on July 16, 2021, transforming a municipal waste site into a modern interpretation of ancient astronomical observation points. The project demonstrates how abandoned industrial sites can be reimagined.
The metal circle functions as an astronomical instrument, with alignments marking the sunrise and sunset points during solstices and equinoxes throughout the year. Visitors can observe these celestial connections directly and understand how ancient peoples read the sky.
The site is accessible every day without admission fees and has designated paths that work for wheelchairs and strollers. Visit during clear weather to enjoy the best views from the elevated vantage point.
The pillars are made from recycled industrial steel and stand at the highest point of a former garbage mound that is now vegetated. This makes the location an unexpected site of nature reclamation within urban industrial history.
