Burg Malchow, Ruine einer Höhenburg in Bad Freienwalde (Oder)
Burg Malchow is a castle ruin located on a hilltop above the Oder River near Bad Freienwalde, built around the year 1214. The foundations and wall stones are still visible today, showing the rectangular shape with walls reaching about 5 feet high.
The castle was built in the Middle Ages and formed part of a defense system protecting a key river crossing, later coming under Brandenburg rule. From the 17th century it fell into decline, and in 1895 a tower was erected using stones from the ruins.
The name Malchow stems from an old legend about the Uchtenhagen family who once owned and defended the castle. Today the ruins offer a quiet place where visitors can imagine medieval life while walking among the stones.
The ruins are located in a quiet woodland area and are accessible to visitors, best reached on foot via marked paths. The nearby Bismarck Tower offers better views and is easier to climb.
Excavations in the late 19th century uncovered old coins and pottery here, including a silver coin from the 14th century bearing a dragon image. These finds suggest the castle was destroyed by fire in medieval times.
