Lloyd Hall, Maritime passenger terminal in Bremerhaven, Germany
Lloyd Hall was a passenger terminal at the Kaiserschleuse lock in Bremerhaven with waiting areas, customs facilities, and a telegraph station. The building served as a connection point between land transport and ocean liners, where travelers boarded tender boats to reach the ships.
The building was constructed in 1870 and rebuilt in 1897 after damage. It remained in operation until its destruction in 1944 during the Second World War.
The building was a place of farewells and fresh starts for thousands of emigrants beginning their journey overseas. It symbolized for many the passage from their old life in Germany to a new existence far away.
The terminal was positioned directly at the harbor lock where passengers could easily transfer between trains and ships. The facility was designed so that customs and baggage processing could be handled efficiently.
Kaiser Wilhelm II delivered a speech here in 1900 to German troops departing for China during the Boxer Rebellion. This appearance made the hall a place of historical importance for the German Empire.
