East Hotel Hamburg, hotel in Hamburg, Germany
East Hotel Hamburg is a hotel built inside a 19th-century foundry building in the St. Pauli district, featuring 65 guest rooms, a restaurant, bar, multiple lounges, and spa facilities. The structure preserves original steel beams and concrete elements while incorporating contemporary furnishings, open layouts, rainfall showers, and flat-screen televisions throughout the spaces.
The building functioned as an iron foundry before 1850, was destroyed by fire in 1851, and was rebuilt to resume operations. It sustained bomb damage during World War II and eventually closed in the late 20th century, remaining vacant until its transformation into a hotel in 2004.
The name "East" reflects Hamburg's eastern location and the designer's inspiration from Asian influences visible in the hotel's flowing forms and colors. Inside, the preserved steel beams and concrete from the old foundry serve as a visual reminder of the building's industrial past. The playful, colorful public spaces blend this heritage with contemporary design in a way visitors can immediately observe and experience.
The hotel sits in the vibrant St. Pauli district near the famous Reeperbahn street with numerous bars and music venues, making it easy to explore Hamburg's entertainment scene. Guest rooms range from compact studios to spacious lofts, each designed with open layouts and modern amenities to suit different preferences.
Many rooms feature oversized bathtubs designed for two people, called Splash Rooms, an unusual amenity rarely found in other hotels. These distinctive bathing spaces were part of the original design concept and add a playful, personal touch that guests often remember long after their stay.
