The European yew tree stands twelve meters tall with a trunk circumference of 1.80 meters in the former parish garden of St. George's Church.
The current yew tree was planted on April 7, 1847, as a successor to an older specimen that was featured in the Somsdorf village coat of arms.
The tree maintains the tradition of the previous 800-year-old yew, which according to legend served as a gathering place for Germanic court sessions.
Visitors can find the natural monument at the intersection of Höckendorfer Street and Am Graben, near two protected oak trees by the Somsdorf cemetery.
The predecessor tree gained national recognition through Professor Roßmäßler's book 'Der Wald' between 1830 and 1850, making it the most substantial yew in Saxony.
