Schloss Groß Germersleben, Medieval château in Groß Germersleben, Germany
Schloss Gross Germersleben is a castle complex with building elements from several centuries near Oschersleben. The main structure has three wings with four rounded corner towers and sits within a landscaped park that includes a pond.
The castle was first documented in 1286 when it was controlled by the Archbishopric of Magdeburg. In 1489 it passed to the von Kotze family, after which major reconstruction took place from 1536 to 1601.
The castle shows traces of different building periods shaped by changing owners and uses over centuries. Walking through the grounds, you can see how each era left its mark on the structure and its surroundings.
Wear sturdy shoes for walking the grounds, as the landscaped park has uneven terrain with different elevation changes. The best time to visit is during warmer months when plants are in full growth and the paths are easiest to navigate.
A fire caused by arson in November 1999 caused serious damage to the structure and marked a turning point in how the castle was maintained. This incident highlighted the need for modern restoration work to protect the building for the future.
