Arnulfsteg, Footbridge in Maxvorstadt and Schwanthalerhöhe districts, Munich, Germany
The Arnulfsteg is a footbridge for pedestrians and cyclists in Munich, crossing over the railway lines near the main station and linking neighborhoods on both sides of the tracks. The bridge is about 790 feet (240 meters) long and offers a wide, flat path along its entire length.
The bridge opened in 2020, closing a gap in the city's walking and cycling network that had existed for many years. Before it was built, people living in the nearby neighborhoods had to take long detours to cross the railway lines.
The bridge is used daily by people on foot and by bike, crossing between neighborhoods that feel quite different from one another. On one side the streets are more residential, while on the other side the area opens toward the city center.
The bridge is open at all times and has elevators on both ends, making it easy to use with a bike, stroller, or wheelchair. The path is wide enough for pedestrians and cyclists to move alongside each other without getting in each other's way.
From the bridge, you can watch trains pulling in and out of the main station while looking down on a wide spread of tracks that is impossible to see from street level. This overhead view gives a clear sense of just how much railway infrastructure runs through the center of the city.
