Kolonie Kleinwelka, Religious settlement in Kleinwelka, Germany.
Kolonie Kleinwelka is a Moravian Brethren settlement in Kleinwelka, Germany, made up of 32 protected buildings and a cemetery where flat sandstone grave markers are laid out in orderly rows. The site includes houses, a prayer hall, a school building, and workshop spaces that still reflect their original layout.
The settlement was founded in 1751 by the Moravian Brethren on the site of an earlier Sorbian manor. Over time it grew into a self-contained community with its own crafts and religious buildings.
The prayer hall shows how daily life in the Moravian Brethren community was organized around shared worship. Visitors can still see how this space served as the center of communal gathering.
The site is compact enough to walk through comfortably, with the buildings and cemetery close together. Daylight hours give the best conditions for reading the grave markers and noticing the details on the facades.
The bell foundry set up by Friedrich Gruhl in 1803 produced over 1700 bells that ended up in churches across Europe. This made the settlement known far outside its own region, well beyond its role as a religious community.
