Naturschutzgebiet Marienfließ, Nature reserve in Ganzlin and Marienfließ, Germany
The Marienfließ Nature Reserve is a large protected area in Brandenburg featuring open heathland, sandy soils, and mixed forests. The landscape alternates between heathland vegetation, grassland, and woodland, providing habitat for specialized plant and animal species.
The area became a nature reserve after 1991 following its use as a military training ground and helicopter landing site by Russian forces. The military occupation had heavily reduced tree cover, leaving behind the open heathland landscape seen today.
The reserve features a 2-kilometer educational trail that provides information about the local flora, fauna, and ecological characteristics of the protected area.
Visitors must stay on marked paths to protect the sensitive heathland and grassland areas. Guided tours are available year-round and help explain the ecological features of the reserve.
Certain heathland plants have adapted specifically to nutrient-poor soil conditions, making the area ecologically distinctive. These specialized species developed due to the harsh soil conditions that persisted over decades.
