Statue of Peace, Bronze monument in Moabit, Germany
The Statue of Peace is a bronze memorial depicting a young girl in Korean dress sitting on a chair in a composed pose. Located on Union Square in the Moabit district, the work stands approximately 10 feet (3 m) tall with a simple yet expressive form.
The memorial was erected in 2020 by the Korea-Verband organization to address historical injustices faced by Korean women. The district assembly voted to keep it permanently in place the following year after initial removal attempts.
The memorial acknowledges the stories of Korean women forced into wartime servitude, making it the first public space in Germany where this overlooked history is openly recognized.
The square is easily reached by public transportation and sits centrally in the Moabit district. The memorial is freely accessible at any time and requires no reservation or advance preparation to visit.
The memorial was initially called the "Comfort Women Statue" before being renamed to emphasize peace and healing. This name change reflected efforts to broaden its message beyond the specific historical context.
