Wackelstein von Loh, Rocking stone in Saldenburg, Germany
Wackelstein von Loh is a massive granite block resting on a flat rock surface at approximately 610 meters elevation, measuring around 4 meters in length and 3 meters in width. The stone displays typical characteristics of spheroidal weathering, where granite forms rounded shapes through natural erosion processes.
The stone formed over millions of years through weathering and erosion processes that shaped the granite into its distinctive form. Its official registration as a geotope in Bavaria took place in 2014 during scientific documentation efforts.
The site attracts nature lovers and hikers from the area who come to experience this unusual geological formation firsthand. Visitors use the location to photograph the granite blocks and connect directly with the natural wonder.
The location sits between the villages of Loh and Entschenreuth and can be reached via marked hiking trails within the Saldenburg municipality. Sturdy shoes are recommended since the path follows unpaved forest trails.
Despite weighing around 50 tons, the block sits so perfectly balanced that a single person can set it into gentle motion with applied force. This ability to rock is what gives the stone its name and makes it notable among geologists and nature enthusiasts.
