Bauernhausmuseum Bortfeld, Traditional farmhouse museum in Bortfeld, Germany
The Bauernhausmuseum Bortfeld is a timber-framed farmhouse built in 1639 with a thatched roof and fieldstone foundation, located near St. George's Church. The building demonstrates the construction methods and layout of a typical farm from that era.
The original farmhouse was built in 1639 after an earlier structure was destroyed by fire in 1566. The building underwent modifications during the 18th and 19th centuries.
The rooms display rural daily life through furnished spaces showing a kitchen, bedroom, and living area. You can see the tools and equipment that were once used in farm work.
The museum operates as a branch of the Braunschweigisches Landesmuseum and offers guided tours and educational programs for schools and families. Visitors should plan enough time to explore the furnished rooms and the adjacent shed displaying old equipment.
The building ranks among the oldest surviving two-post hall houses in the former Duchy of Braunschweig. Next to it stands a shed filled with historical agricultural devices and implements from farm life.
