Teufelsbackofen, Natural cave in Langwasser district, Nuremberg, Germany
The Teufelsbackofen is a natural cave in Nuremberg's Langwasser district with rock formations inside that you can walk through upright. It sits southeast of the city center and is surrounded by modern residential areas.
Excavations in the 1930s found medieval objects and pottery from the Iron Age period inside. The cave shows that this location was used by people long before modern times.
The name comes from a water source near the cave, not from baking as the name might suggest. This spring made the place notable for people living in the area.
The cave is easy to reach and located in a residential area with good access from nearby streets. It is best to ask locals for directions or find a guide since the site is not heavily marked.
From 1967 into the early 1990s the land around it was an airfield for the United States Army. This unusual use of a historic location lasted nearly 30 years before returning to residential use.
