Meißen Domplatz 1 Kornhaus, Medieval granary at Domplatz, Meißen, Germany
The Kornhaus at Domplatz 1 is a multi-storey stone building with a steep roof on the castle hill in Meissen, Saxony. The construction shows typical features of Saxon building methods from the late 15th century.
Construction took place in 1494 when the medieval fortress was converted into a castle and space was needed for grain storage and guard posts. The foundations were laid directly on the rock of the castle hill, which required special building methods.
The name refers to the original function as a storage place for grain reserves kept on the hilltop. Later, King Johann of Saxony used it for living quarters, which gave the interior rooms their current form.
The building stands on the castle hill and can be reached via the paths leading to the cathedral grounds. The Emma and Otto Horn Foundation acquired the property in December 2023 and began extensive renovation work, including complete roof renewal through May 2024.
The position directly on solid rock posed special challenges for the builders and required engineering skill to secure stability on the elevated terrain. This construction method remains visible on the castle hill today and shapes the structure of the house.
