Gasspeicher Eschenfelden, Underground gas storage facility in Eschenfelden, Germany
Gasspeicher Eschenfelden is an underground storage facility near Hirschbach designed to hold natural gas reserves. The storage chambers sit roughly 600 meters below ground and contain a total capacity of around 168 million cubic meters.
The facility was constructed in 1964 under Ruhrgas AG management and began operations in 1967. It initially stored coke oven gas before converting to natural gas in 1971.
The facility represents German engineering advancement in energy infrastructure, contributing to regional development and industrial heritage of Bavaria.
The storage site spreads across several square kilometers east of Eschenfelden and is easily recognizable from the nearby highway access road. Access to the facility is restricted since it operates under industrial safety regulations.
In September 1970 the site experienced a major gas accident that required specialized intervention techniques to control the resulting fire. This incident led to improved safety standards in similar facilities across Europe.
