Kotoka International Airport, International airport in Accra, Ghana
Kotoka International Airport is an international airport in the La-Dade-Kotopon Municipal District within metropolitan Accra, featuring two passenger terminals and a cargo handling facility. The newer Terminal 3 includes multiple levels with arrival and departure halls, while Terminal 2 handles smaller aircraft and domestic connections.
The British Royal Air Force established a military base here during the Second World War, which was converted into a civilian facility after the conflict ended. Expansion took place in stages, with Terminal 3 arriving in the 21st century to meet growing demand for air connections across the region.
The airport grounds sit on the outskirts of Accra and serve as a central hub for travelers from West and Central Africa. Passengers often experience a mix of local activity and international travel culture as arrivals wearing traditional fabrics blend with visitors from around the world.
The terminals are accessible via paved access roads, with separate zones for arrivals and departures on different levels. Travelers should allow time for security checks, especially during peak hours in the early morning and late evening when many international flights operate.
The name honors Lieutenant General Emmanuel Kwasi Kotoka, who died during a military coup in 1967. Visitors can find references to this naming throughout the terminal, which forms part of Ghana's recent history.
