Tongo Hills

Tongo Hills is a chain of granite formations in Upper East Region that creates a U-shaped valley opening northward. The site contains numerous paths that wind through the landscape and lead to different notable locations within the hills.

The caves within these hills provided refuge for local people during the British colonial period. This role shows how the location became important for communities defending their independence.

The Tengzug Shrine sits within these hills as a sacred center for the local community. Visitors who enter the shrine grounds participate in traditional customs that show how deeply the site remains connected to daily spiritual life.

Local guides lead visitors along established paths and explain both the landscape and cultural aspects of different areas. Wear sturdy footwear since the routes cross rocky ground and uneven terrain throughout the hills.

Certain granite formations generate audible sounds when powerful winds blow from the Sahara across the landscape. This acoustic phenomenon occurs mainly during the dry season months and creates an unusual natural experience that most visitors do not expect.
