Zakros, Archaeological site in Kato Zakro, Greece

The Minoan palace at Zakros spans 4,500 square meters and contains storage rooms, residential quarters, ceremonial spaces, and administrative sections along the eastern coast.

British archaeologist David Hogarth initiated excavations at Zakros in 1900, uncovering Late Minoan houses and evidence of Bronze Age correspondence systems.

The palace functioned as both an administrative center and religious hub, featuring numerous artifacts including pottery, tools, seals, and frescoes depicting marine life.

The archaeological site opens daily from 9 AM to 3 PM except Mondays, with bus services running from Sitia to Kato Zakro.

The location served as a vital maritime trading port connecting Minoan Crete with Africa and Asia through the protected natural harbor.
