Keramia municipality, Former municipality in Chania Regional Unit, Greece.
This region spreads across hillsides and mountain slopes south of Chania and includes several small villages such as Gerolakos, Malaxa, Katochori, Kontopoula, and Drakona. The settlements are scattered across a landscape with narrow, winding roads that pass through olive groves and pine forests.
The region became part of the larger Chania municipality in 2011 after Greece reformed its administrative structures. This merger changed the political role of individual village communities, but not their independence in daily life.
The mountain villages here maintain local customs and ways of life that differ clearly from the tourist coastal areas. Visitors find traditional crafts and everyday practices still alive in these communities.
Exploring the villages requires a car, as the narrow mountain roads are difficult to navigate on foot and the settlements are spread far apart. It is wise to consult a local guide or research directions beforehand, since the winding roads can be easy to get lost in.
The remote roads and limited infrastructure have kept tourism minimal here, preserving the villages relatively untouched. This allows visitors today to see daily life and the landscape much as they have changed little over decades.
